Order Diptera – Flies

The order Diptera is the second largest order in the UK after Hymenoptera – Ants Bees and Wasps and has just over 7000 species. Flies are distinguished from other invertibrates by having only one pair of membranous wings and mouth parts adapted for sucking rather than chewing.
